Today, Local 4100 President Andrea Joseph testified in front of the NYC City Council in support of Intro 360-2024, a bill that would require the party that hires a broker to pay broker fees, as opposed to placing that burden on the renter alone. Watch her testimony here. Currently, postdocs are only guaranteed housing for 3 years. If a postdoc needs to rent on the open market, they may need to:

  • put down first and last month’s rent

  • show proof of 40X rent in annual income

  • pay an additional broker’s fee (ranging from 8-15% of annual rent)

In support of the bill, NYC residents can also submit written testimony until 5:00 PM this Saturday, June 15th. Please consider submitting a testimony here, especially if you have had to pay broker’s fee to rent in NYC.

Canvass for Claire Valdez

UAW Region 9A has endorsed Clair Valdez, a Latina, longtime UAW member and organizer, and NYC-DSA member, in the race for NY State Assembly in District 37 which includes Sunnyside, Ridgewood, Woodside, Maspeth, Middle Village and Long Island City. Claire fights for workers rights, high-quality housing, health care and education for all. Her campaign is a grassroots movement, run by small donations and hundreds of volunteers.

Please consider volunteering for the upcoming canvassing events for her campaign listed below. International workers are encouraged to participate (you do not need to be a US citizen to come)! We need more union folks in office, so let’s get Claire elected. Early voting begins June 15th.

Queer Liberation March

Join fellow Local 4100 members at the 6th Annual Queer Liberation March! We will meet on Sunday June 30, 2024 at 11:00 am at Sheridan Square and march to Battery Park. RSVP to join us here.

The Queer Liberation March is organized by the Reclaim Pride Coalition (RPC), a grassroots collective that has organized the march in New York City every June since 2019. They seek to honor and reclaim the spirit of the Stonewall Riots, centering and amplifying the voices and needs of marginalized LGBTQIA2S+ communities. You can consider donating and learning more here. Hope to see you there!
